Writer in Residence – Pedro Gunnlaugur Garcia

Half-man, half-crab. Pedro Gunnlaugur Garcia is not “all there” mentally. When he says he writes, you have to understand that it is mostly pornography and that it is very bad and confusing pornography because he doesn’t seem to know where all the organs are, who has what bits, and what goes where; it’s really sad, actually. He lives in some lake, probably.

If you want to know more about Pedro and his novels Iceland Review have a great article.

Artist in Residence – Kerry Quinn

Kerry Quinn is a photographer using 35mm and polaroid film to capture energy, spirits and auras in the natural world. I seek to reveal what the eye can’t see but the soul knows to be a true, a dance between light and dark, living all the colors in between.

During my NES residency, i traveled throughout Iceland, going deep into nature to commune with and photograph the soul of the land. I shot with vintage cameras and lenses, including petzkval and helios, with a mix of experimental, expired and rare 35mm film. I also played with dismantling polaroids, painting on them with watercolors, carving into the emulsion and adding natural local elements like fish scales and black sand.

Michele Alborg is a Vancouver, Canada based painter. During her month at the NES Artist Residency, she expanded beyond her usual oil and large-scale canvas-based work, and explored small, paper-based acrylics and watercolours. She attempts to capture mumbles and unconscious thoughts, mixing imagery of the current Iceland setting with musings and memory. She searches for whimsy and joy with hints of melancholy and loss. Artist in Residence – Sybille Richter

26 août 2025 à 17:52

Sybille Richter is a jewelry artist based in Weimar, Germany. Her pieces in precious metals, gemstones, aluminum, or self cut stones transform the vast into the miniature, into the small scale. In addition to her own work, Sybille runs the Ring Weimar Gallery, a jewelry gallery specializing in artistic rings. During her time at NES, inspired by the surroundings of Skagaströnd, she is exploring new forms and directions in her artistic practice. Her process is a response to the materials. The conversation between artist and material is central to her creative practice. You can view more of her work at ring-weimar.de and on instagram @ring.weimar

Artist in Residence – Sibylle Mania

l often collect things or ideas and capture them photographically or in a rough sketch, or I make casts of found objects in order to build something new. This collage-like fusion of natural forms with my own invention creates an interesting tension. Traces of culture (ancient and contemporary) and nature (patterns and plant growth) play a meaningful role. I enjoy the chance elements inherent to the casting process. Cuttlefish casting, for example, involves the rendering of a specific form, combined with a great deal of coincidence.

  • NYC, silver gelatin print on Nepal paper, 2001/20, 25×17 cm
