WAAM Regional: Spirit of Woodstock is a survey of contemporary work by regional artists that explores the continuing legacy of the spiritual, cultural, political and social changes of the 1960s. WAAM welcomes a range of styles and mediums influenced by this landmark era in Woodstock that continues to have a profound impact on artmaking in the region today. Everything from abstract art to socially engaged practices will be considered to the extent that it reflects the boundary-pushing culture of the time.

WAAM Regional is open to artists living within a 50-mile radius of Woodstock, NY

EXHIBITION DETAILS

JUROR: Drew Thompson, Associate Professor of Visual Culture and Black Studies at Bard Graduate Center

SUBMISSION FEE: FREE for members, $35 for non-members

SUBMIT ONLINE: April 2 – May 1, 2024, midnight

NOTIFICATION: via email, May 23, 2024

All media welcome, no size restriction

INTAKE of ARTWORK: Monday, August 12, 10am-5pm

PICK UP of ARTWORK: Monday, October 7, 10am-5pm

APPLICATION MATERIALS

Up to three images (.jpg) and descriptions

Brief Artist Statement (300 - 500 words)

  • Artwork must be ready to install with appropriate hardware
  • Video artists may submit one text document with up to 3 links to files to be reviewed. Please provide title, date, running time and retail price for each video.
  • All media will be considered. Submissions can range from, (but aren’t limited to), painting, sculpture, video, photography, drawing, sound and music. There are no size restrictions.
  • Artists must be able to transport or ship work to WAAM. Shipped work must contain a prepaid return label.
  • All work should be in good condition and ready to hang or install
  • Any special installation needs must be supplied by the artist for the duration of the show and should be noted in their submission.
  • All work must be the original conception and execution of the artist listed. No reproductions.
  • WAAM reserves the right to reject works that do not comply with these guidelines or are otherwise found to be unsuitable for display.
  • WAAM takes a 40% commission on sales in support of its programs. Artists should consider this when pricing submitted work. All work submitted must be for sale.
  • Application fee for non-members: $35. Members apply for free. All submissions are welcome.

About the Juror

Drew Thompson is an art historian and curator of African and Black Diaspora visual and material culture. He recently co-curated the award-winning exhibition Benjamin Wigfall and Communications Village at the Dorsky Museum of Art and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Sightlines on Peace, Power, & Prestige: Metal Arts of Africa at Bard Graduate Center Gallery. His art criticism and writings on contemporary art have appeared in Africa Is A Country, Foam Magazine, the White Review and in edited volumes published by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Image Centre, and the Walther Collection.

JURORS: Tracey Cockrell, interdisciplinary artist and teacher

DEADLINE: May 1, 2024

Small Works: Plant Based invites artists to submit work involving the intersection of nature and art, including botanical art, environmental art, and art and biology. The theme is open for interpretation and we ask artists to submit works that deliver highly-imaginative takes on the theme. The juror will be most interested in the process, materials and message of the artwork.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

  • Size Limit 15 x 15” overall, 24” for sculpture
  • Artists will submit 1 jpg/png/mp3/mov file of works for the juror’s consideration. All media are welcome
  • Brief Artist Statement (300 - 500 words)
  • You must have means to transport the work to & from WAAM and to participate on the drop off and pick up dates.
  • Artists receive 60% of sales during the run of the exhibition. WAAM retains 40% of sales. Work submitted must be for sale.
