Wild Clay Workshop & Wilderness Arts Residency, USA

Wild Clay Workshop & Wilderness Arts Residency

Sat July 26th - Sat August 9th, 2025

Each summer the Visitor Center Artist Camp hosts one group of Resident Artists from around the country for two weeks of camping, living cooperatively outdoors, working, playing, reflecting, and making art in conversation with the North Woods wilderness.

The Wild Clay Workshop will lead residents through the entire process from prospecting for clay, through all the processes of harvesting and mixing and making, and finally through various firing processes. This workshop is taught by professional wild clay hunter and co-founder of VCAC, Amy Joy Hosterman of Stinky Cheese Ceramics.

Independent Projects Artists in Residence will have time and space to explore nature and work on their own independent art mediums. Staff-Artists are here to support Independent Residents, providing guidance as needed, access to tools, and connections to resources.

VCAC runs on community. We are artists, makers, collectors, explorers, campers, canners, caretakers, and nerds for the earth! Meals are all cooked and served to you at camp by our hard-working Staff, who wear a lot of hats to keep camp running. Residents help out with the dishes and other simple daily chores.

We are professional artists and educators who come together once a year at the VCAC - in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, nestled between rural townships and the Ottawa National Forest.

  • Adults (21+) of all creative backgrounds, experience levels, and fields of practice are encouraged to apply. Wild Clay Workshop intended for those with some experience in clay.

BUDDY SYSTEM: An Exhibit of Paired Works by Artist Friends, Peers, Colleagues, or Associates*, USA

Par : Manifest
27 mars 2025 à 19:23

The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works of art in any media, any genre/style, and any size in tandem with another artist. Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, including 2D, 3D, etc.

Often artists develop special bonds supporting, critiquing, challenging, and celebrating each other's works over years and lifetimes, all while maintaining an informal peer relationship. Or maybe, sometimes, they just maintain a strong affinity for one another's work—one of the best forms of support and critical validation there is, respect by a peer one respects in-turn.

Out of respect for this artist-artist relationship—perhaps the most vital force in supporting quality and achievement in the visual arts—we offer BUDDY SYSTEM* for the first time ever, aiming to exhibit paired works of art by artists who share mutual respect and participate in this important peer support system.

It is important to note that this project is open to any artist at any level. The sole criteria for the pairing is that the relationship between the two is one of admiration, respect, support, friendship, or other positive peer engagement.

This RFQ&E is a call for multiple artwork opportunities under SMForward’s Concourse B Expansion project.

Six (6) additional gates will be added to the west end of Concourse B. These areas are primarily for passengers awaiting departure but also for arriving passengers. They are areas of interlude that give the viewer time to slow down and reflect before, after, or between flights. The opportunity here is to invite travelers deeper into the works of art and revel in their detail, sparking moments of curiosity, contemplation, and calm.

In collaboration with the architect, spaces to hang two-dimensional works of art or low-relief wall pieces will be designed at multiple gates. Artworks for these spaces could be large or small scale and commissioned or purchased with budgets ranging between $25,000 to $200,000. This opportunity was specifically created to engage artists who do not have public art experience.

The fees cover: semi-private studio space(s), private room in a shared house (our Family program receives a private house), access to our wood shop, print shop, and kiln, staff support, and programming such as our visiting artist program, artist talks, studio visits, open studios, artist presentations, etc.

The Wassaic Project cultivates and supports the community for emerging and professional contemporary artists, writers, curators, filmmakers, and other creatives. Housed in historic, landmark buildings, the residency program offers ten artists each month the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community. The Wassaic Project seeks artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art-making practices while participating in a community-based arts organization. We will not be holding separate Summer and Winter Residency open calls this year. Instead, we will be holding one Artist Residency open call for the entirety of 2026.

On our SlideRoom application, you will be able to specify which sessions you’re most interested in joining us for. Applications will be open from March 24 to June 2, 2025.

FAMILY RESIDENCY PROGRAM: The Wassaic Project broadly defines “family” as a group of more than one individual where there is an in-house dependent relationship as a necessary caregiver. The Wassaic Project recognizes that artists who have caregiving relationships, as providers or recipients, often opt out of peer community building for practical reasons. The Wassaic Project aims to provide accommodations that increase access to our residency program. Examples of caregiving may include but are not limited to: parent/child (parent is caregiver), child/parent (child is caregiver), partner/partner (where one partner is a supportive caregiver of the other and cohabitation is required for caregiving), a recipient of caregiving, self-selection into this application for separate and additional housing space by identifying as a family applicant.

REVIEW: Residents are selected by a review committee composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, the Director of Artistic Programming, and professionals in the field. Residents will be chosen based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

Call for Art: HOME, USA

Call for Entries: H O M E

Curator: Fiona Cashell

Application Deadline: April 26, 2025

What does it mean to call a place home? How does the act of moving—leaving, arriving, migrating—shape a person? When we think of our relationship to place, there are many complex experiences to consider, and many questions to ask. Perhaps the thread that connects us all, is the desire to belong.

In both philosophical and Buddhist thought, impermanence speaks of the transient nature of all things—the inevitability of change, movement, and transformation. This concept can resonate deeply when we find ourselves navigating new territories; when caught between the familiar and the unknown, or when searching for stability in flux, or even searching for flux infixed stability.

The inertia of not changing creates a tension between wanting to shift direction and being unable to make a move. Home offers safety and protection from the cold, unless home is the cold, then home becomes a prison.

The tension between longing to stay and the pull to explore– between holding onto what we know or embracing the unknown — unable to leave/ unable to stay.

To seek to belong is to map the self. We position and negotiate our identities within landscapes, environments, and place. This experience is universal, transcending cultures, geographies, borders and histories. It compels us to ask: What is home? How does it manifest —as a place, a person, an object, a phrase, a poem, or even as a memory?

We invite submissions that explore these themes through:

  • Narrative inquiry
  • Documentative, explorative, or speculative approaches
  • Interdisciplinary practice
  • Conceptual, abstract, or experimental processes

We are particularly interested in works that engage with concepts relating to:

  • Belonging
  • Home (what is home, its meaning, its representation)
  • Place, landscape, and environment
  • Borders and liminal spaces
  • Mapping the self and identity in flux
  • Navigating the unknown or unfamiliar

Deadline for Submission of Applications: Saturday, April 26 at 11:59pm CST

Opening Reception, Friday, June 6, 5:00-8:00pm

  • Exhibition dates: June 5 - 27, 2024
  • Gallery hours: Thurs – Fri 2-6pm, Sat – Sun 12-4 pm

Expand and Contract 2025: AI and Alternative Processes, USA

Open Call: Expand and Contract 2025: AI and Alternative Processes
Juried By: Dr. Rotem Rozental, Los Angeles Center of Photography Executive Director and Chief Curator.
Deadline for Submission: Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Midnight
Notice of Acceptance: Tuesday, May 6th, 2025
Opening Reception (Virtual): Thursday, May 29, 2025, 6-7 pm PST on Zoom
Exhibition Run Dates (Virtual): May 29 4, 2025 - August 31, 2025 (Virtual)

Description
Winners and up to three select honorable mentions’ work will be invited to show via an in-person curated exhibition at LACP’s Downtown LA home, in addition to being featured online on the LACP website.

This call invites submissions that consider AI technologies as the most recent addition to the world of alternative processes, and works that explore the connections between AI, camerawork, analogue technologies and visual storytelling, whether while capturing images or printing them. The selected works will be featured in a virtual exhibition on LACP’s website, and selected works will be featured in an in-person exhibition that will open at our DTLA gallery on June 11, 2025.

Technological developments hasten pronouncements regarding the death of photography every few decades, with the most recent trigger being digital innovations, such as digital cameras and image editing software. And yet, photography persists. In fact, it continues to re-define how we engage with one another, imagine ourselves and our position in the world. Most recently, AI caused an uproar among visual practitioners, as machines have been trained to create images using images produced by humans who were not paid for services unknowingly provided. Moreover, AI seems to pose a threat to human agency.

From a creative standpoint, this exhibition considers such conflicts and wonders whether AI is another tool that will expand alternative means to create images, or another step toward the end of photographic creativity as we know it.

Fairytale Town Public Art Project - Call for Artists, USA

24 mars 2025 à 01:02

Fairytale Town invites artists and artist teams residing in the United States to submit their qualifications for the Fairytale Town public art project in Sacramento, CA. The artwork opportunity is for an approximately 20’ x 30’ interactive playset installation for kids aged 1-10 to climb, walk through, and explore.

Applicants do not need to have previous experience creating playsets to be qualified for the project. However, past experience must show outdoor installations of a similar scale to this project.

About Fairytale Town

Fairytale Town is a children’s storybook park in Sacramento, covering 3.5 acres. It is an independent nonprofit organization. Opened in 1959, it now hosts over 200,000 children and their families each year who pay a modest admission fee. The park features over 25 playsets, each themed on a classic folktale or fairytale (Cinderella, Old Woman in the Shoe, Anansi the Spider, Mr. McGregor’s Garden, etc.) The park is also home to a family of live barnyard animals (three little pigs, billy goats gruff, Mary’s little lambs, etc.).

Its mission is to promote the imagination, creativity and education of children. A core philosophy is outdoor unstructured play. None of the playsets move (no carnival rides); instead, the beautiful playsets encourage children to be physically active, and they require the child to furnish the play narrative. Each playset is high-quality artisanry – both artistically meritorious and functional.

For more information about Fairytale Town: https://www.fairytaletown.org/

Project Description and Goals

The artwork opportunity is for an approximately 20’ x 30’ interactive playset installation for kids ages 1-10 to climb, walk through, and explore.

The artwork should:

- Engage children ages 1-10

- Be made with durable materials suitable for the outdoors and for children to play and interact with.

- Be inspired by (but not necessarily be a literal interpretation of) the Monkey King. The Monkey King (or Sun Wukong) is a trickster and a main character in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West: Legends of the Monkey King, a classic of Chinese literature.

- Encourage children to be physically active and inspire them to furnish a play narrative.

Site Description

There are multiple approximately 20’ x 30’ locations may be considered by selected finalists for the Monkey King artwork installation.  All of the sites are adjacent to other play features.

NUDE: 17th Annual Call for Works Exploring the Uncovered Human Form in Current Art, USA

Par : Manifest
20 mars 2025 à 01:13

The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works that address the uncovered human form. Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D visual arts media.

The human body is a popular subject for many reasons, the most obvious being that it is us. Throughout history (and pre-history) the representation of the human form has been charged with tremendous energy. Whether it be a religious edict that one should not depict the human form—a taboo, or the glorious opposite—a revelation of mastery over form in the crafting of sensuous and life-like physical human beauty, the art of the body has moved us through time.

Through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, political, social, narrative, spiritual, and so on). We intend for Manifest's ongoing annual NUDE project, now in its 17th year, to explore how our collective body is used today in art to achieve these goals and more.

$45 for up to three entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.

Includes honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist and Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

Behind the Mask: A Portrait Exhibition, USA

Spiva Center for the Arts invites artists to submit portrait work for a new exhibition exploring the tension between external appearances and internal truths.

Behind the Mask challenges the audience to examine how we navigate the complex relationship between our public selves and our private identities. Whether literal, metaphorical, or psychological, the "mask" serves as a symbol of the roles we adopt, the facades we construct, and the truth we conceal. These do not need to be self-portraits.

We invite entries of work in any physical medium. This will be a juried exhibition, and the work selected will be on display in Spiva’s gallery for seven weeks.

Artwork Guidelines:

Mediums Accepted: We are accepting all forms of portraiture, including but not limited to painting, photography, mixed media, and sculpture.

Presentation Restriction: Accepted work must not be presented behind glass, unless it is hand-delivered.

Focus: Portraits should explore the theme of masks—whether through symbolism, abstract representations, or direct depictions. Consider how your work might show the divide between outward appearances and inner emotions or truths. We are not necessarily looking for literal masks.

Awards:

Monetary prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

We invite work that captures the blurred line between reality and fiction, bringing forth the magic, wonder, and complexity of the mind’s eye. All photographic processes and interpretations are welcome, from surreal digital composites to dreamlike film captures and abstract experimental works.

We are honored to have Emma Powell as juror for Dreams and Imagined Realities. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. NYC4PA TREES Call for Entry, USA

I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.

Joyce Kilmer wrote those words in 1915. And they hold true today. Trees are all around us in cities, towns and the country. They can be a striking visual, as a standalone in a barren landscape or be part of everyday life in the yard with an old tire swing hanging from a low branch. Trees are much a part of the animal kingdom providing limbs for resting and nesting, as well as wonderful sources of food for so many species.

Forests and jungles create whole environments. Trees standing alone on hillsides create lovely shadows. They can be tall and straight like a winter pine or bend and twist as they grow. The art can be found in the leaves, the branches, single trees or in groups of every size from oases to orchards.

2025 Summer Juried Show: The Real, USA

9 mars 2025 à 21:14

We are excited to present a call for submissions for our Summer Juried Show: The Real.

The Real is an exhibition that highlights artists’ technical abilities in rendering real life within art, from realism to hyperrealism.

Artists have a unique ability to blur the boundary between the physical world and the creative plane through their artwork. The effect of such, known as “trompe l’oeil”, has been seen throughout art history, from ancient Greek painter Zeuxis’ grape still life that was so realistic it attracted hungry birds, to contemporary artist Ron Mueck’s figurative sculptures that make audiences look twice. Work that exudes this level of realism continues to serve as an impressive art form and calls for both artist and audience to look closely and partake in the thrill of this craft.

  • What draws you to create work in such detail?

  • Is there room for artistic interpretation within realistic/hyperrealistic art?

  • What can one learn through close observation and careful rendition?

Artists are invited to submit up to 3 works by May 4th to the following form. Applicants will be notified with a decision by May 16th.

**Please note: Due to the nature of this exhibition, we will not be accepting photographic works.**

Submissions should be high resolution photos (72ppi) including the title of the work, year of creation, dimensions, media, and name of the artist. Please include a statement that addresses at least one of the prompted questions above.

Selected artwork(s) must be dropped off or shipped to Abington Art Center by June 7.

All shipping costs are covered by the artist. Please include a return label, as artwork(s) will be shipped back to the artist in the box it came in.

Exhibition will run June 20 - July 28, 2025

The opening reception and award ceremony will be held on June 20th, 6-8pm

Par : Manifest
27 février 2025 à 01:48

The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit proposals of original bodies of work for consideration during the 2025/26 exhibit season.

On average, one-third of Manifest's exhibits are dedicated to solo exhibits. Solo exhibitors have included local, regional, and national artists from as far away as New York City, San Francisco, Canada, and Hong Kong. It is important to our non-profit mission that each of our seasons of free public exhibits consist of a balanced mix of solo and group thematic projects. The group shows provide diversity of approach, media, style, and geographic origin, while the solo exhibits provide a deeper insight into an artist's vision. Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media.

Anyone can submit a proposal. Artists should bear in mind the need for a consistent and very strong body of work when submitting. Quality of documentation/images affects the committee's impression of the submitting artist.

Call for Art, The Still Life, USA

26 février 2025 à 22:54

Still-life painting emerged as a distinct genre and professional specialization in Western painting by the late 16th century, and has remained significant since then. One advantage of the still-life artform is that it allows an artist much freedom to experiment with the arrangement of elements within a composition of a painting

Still-life painting encompasses other types of painting with prominent still-life elements, usually symbolic, and "images that rely on a multitude of still-life elements ostensibly to reproduce a 'slice of life'".Artwork may be 2D work; painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. Original artwork only. No giclées or reproductions.

Open Call | Exhibition in China - Urban Landscape, USA

Independent & Image Art Space (Chongqing, China) is happy to announce a group exhibition open call “Urban Landscape".

This exhibition open call for submissions aims to explore and present the diversity and complexity of modern urban environments through the unique perspective of photography. We invite artists to focus on the multiple facets of urban spaces, including their form, structure, and transformation, capturing a range of scenes from bustling streets to quiet corners, and from modern architecture to historical landmarks. Through these works, we seek to showcase the physical characteristics of urban environments while delving into how human activity shapes these spaces, reflecting societal changes, cultural diversity, and the interplay of individual emotions.

Photographers are encouraged to capture seemingly ordinary urban moments, conveying a visual language filled with tension and rhythm. These images will invite the audience to reexamine the everyday elements of the city, uncovering the subtle emotions and meanings often overlooked in the details and imagery. In doing so, artists will not only showcase the external forms of urban landscapes but also reveal the dynamic relationship between humans and the city through photographic language, reflecting the cultural depth and continuous transformation of urban life.

This exhibition aims to provoke deep reflection on urban environments, presenting not only their physical transformations but also exploring the underlying social, cultural, and emotional layers. Through these visual works, we hope to uncover the subtle connection between humanity and the urban landscape, examining the multiple dimensions of the city as a microcosm of society and culture.

WATCHING: A Call for Works About Observation, Surveillance, Examination, and Paying Close Attention, USA

Par : Manifest
20 février 2025 à 20:14

The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works about looking and being looked at. Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, including 2D, 3D, etc.

What does it feel like to be looked at?

A part of us craves the attention of others. Kids beg to be observed as they dive into a pool. So many of us post pictures online, waiting for responses from our audience of friends and strangers. Being watched means that we may be loved, or that we may be important. Maybe others will be impressed! Maybe they will like us more—or maybe they will like us less. We modulate our behavior for that attention. It changes us. It creates ‘culture'.

Every year Manifest produces a special exhibit of LITTLE works of art from around the world.

Each iteration of the exhibit brings in hundreds of powerful yet diminutive works for our jury to consider. Inevitably this results in a gallery full of diverse, compelling, and exquisite little gems. Manifest’s patrons eagerly await the Magnitude SEVEN event each year. This annual project is one of the most varied exhibits in our season. So we are always excited to offer this call to artists to submit works no larger than seven inches in any dimension (any proportion).

Standard presentation devices such as pedestals, mats, and frames that are not considered part of the work of art are not limited by the 7" criteria.

Aurora Borealis. Artists residency programme. CALL 4 ENTRIES, USA

8 février 2025 à 18:25

AURORA BOREALIS is the title of a proposal that aims to add, through the imaginative and transformative power of art and beauty, a Boreal imagery to Aurora, the youngest and most "real" neighborhood in Turin. This is based on the premise that art is not an "exclusive" language, but an accessible and inclusive one, through which individuals and communities can not only feel represented but also become protagonists of processes to transform their habitat, actively becoming promoters of change and appropriation of the contexts in which they live.

The project includes a residency program for artists who are invited to transform from creators into community activators through the creation of public art works, realized through participatory processes conducted by the resident artists, which respond to the desires and needs of the community and will be donated to the community, finding placement in public or private spaces throughout the neighborhood.

The project includes three main actions:

  1. The creation of Borealis, the new cultural and social center of the Aurora district, characterized by a schedule of activities and events defined through a co-programming process with stakeholders and local residents: ASSEMBLEA BOREALE.
  2. The creation of public art works, realized through participatory processes conducted by resident artists, which respond to the desires and needs of the community and will be donated to the community, finding placement in public or private spaces throughout the neighborhood.
  3. A new residency program for artists hosted at viadellafucina16 condominio-museo, who are invited to transform from creators into community activators and to lead training and participatory creation processes.

The project asserts the role of creativity and imagination as tools for social transformation and aims to generate a sense of civic responsibility among young people and the so-called vulnerable groups. These groups are called upon, both as recipients and active participants, to intervene in the territory where they live through relational and participatory artistic practices, to envision the future of their neighborhood. The planned group activities will be an important moment of training for both the artists and the beneficiaries, who will acquire specific technical-artistic skills and transversal competences such as creativity and critical thinking, to feel like active members of the community where they will find a recognized space for action. Furthermore, among the objectives is to increase the city's heritage of public art works in marginalized urban areas, by inviting new artistic entities to operate in relation to the territory and highlighting the city and its tangible and intangible heritage.

Aurora Borealis represents a unique artist residency format on an international level, in which the relationship between the artist and the community is central in all phases of the process:

  • in the commissioning and selection of artistic projects
  • in the design and creation of artworks
  • in the enjoyment and final return

Mission of the artists: The artists are called to transform from creators into community activators and to propose collective creation paths aimed at specific groups of beneficiaries (young residents of the neighborhood, young artists, students, women's groups, young migrants, young people with disabilities, etc.)

Benefits of the residency programme:

  • a fee of 1600 euros
  • an initial collective masterclass
  • coverage of production costs for the artwork
  • hospitality at viadellafucina16 condominio-museo (independent accommodation)
  • workspace and area for conducting workshops
  • technical assistance during the creation of the artwork
  • cultural mediators for interaction with the beneficiaries of the co-creation processes
  • curatorial support, press office, and networking
  • video-photographic documentation of the residency
  • possibility to organize public talks and other presentations
  • in special cases, a partial or total reimbursement of travel costs will be considered

The call is open to artists active in any discipline who have a previous exhibition record and prior experience in participatory artistic practices.

When applying, artists are required to document their artistic journey and present a draft of the project they intend to realize.

The scientific committee—composed of distinguished figures from the world of contemporary arts and social innovation—will select a shortlist of finalist projects, of high artistic quality and social impact, to be submitted to the Boreal Assembly: a committee that citizens, associations, entities, and companies from the territory can spontaneously join.

Through this process, a total of six projects will be selected to access the residency program.
