Celebrata per il suo lavoro nella creazione di un linguaggio architettonico contemporaneo e profondamente legato a un luogo, un clima, un contesto, una cultura e una storia specifici, Marina Tabassum porta la sua visione distintiva al Serpentine Pavilion 2025. Il suo progetto evoca un dialogo significativo tra la natura permanente e quella effimera della commissione.
Lungo l’asse nord-sud del parco, A Capsule in Time presenta una forma allungata simile a una capsula con un cortile centrale allineato al campanile della Serpentine South. Ispirata alle passeggiate estive nei parchi e alle tettoie ad arco dei giardini che filtrano la luce soffusa del giorno attraverso il fogliame verde, la struttura è composta da quattro forme scultoree in legno con una facciata traslucida che diffonde e filtra la luce quando entra nello spazio. Parte integrante del progetto di Tabassum è un elemento cinetico che consente a una delle capsule di muoversi, collegarsi e trasformare il padiglione in un nuovo spazio.
Enfatizzando le possibilità sensoriali e spirituali dell’architettura attraverso la scala e il gioco di luci e ombre, il progetto di Tabassum si ispira alla storia e alla tradizione architettonica delle tende Shamiyana o dei tendoni dell’Asia meridionale. Simili nella loro funzione cinetica, queste strutture sono realizzate in tessuto sostenuto da pali di bambù e sono comunemente utilizzate per riunioni e celebrazioni all’aperto. L’apertura del padiglione di Tabassum accoglie le possibilità di unire i visitatori attraverso conversazioni, connessioni, programmi dal vivo e incontri pubblici.
La selezione per il Serpentine Pavilion 2025 è stata effettuata da Bettina Korek, amministratore delegato, e Hans Ulrich Obrist, direttore artistico, insieme a Julie Burnell, direttore dei lavori e dei progetti speciali, Chris Bayley, curatore delle mostre, Natalia Grabowska, curatrice generale, architettura e progetti site-specific, e Alexa Chow, assistente curatrice delle mostre, insieme ai consulenti Sou Fujimoto e David Glover.
Marina Tabassum (nata nel 1969 a Dhaka, Bangladesh) è un’acclamata architetta e docente che ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali per il suo contributo nel campo dell’architettura. Si è laureata nel 1995 presso la Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Prima di fondare Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA) nel 2005, Tabassum è stata socia fondatrice dello studio URBANA con sede a Dhaka tra il 1995 e il 2005 insieme a Kashef Chowdhury. Nel 1997, URBANA ha vinto il concorso nazionale per la progettazione del Monumento all’Indipendenza del Bangladesh e del Museo dell’Indipendenza sotto l’egida del Dipartimento dei Lavori Pubblici e del Ministero degli Affari della Guerra di Liberazione.
