NYC4PA Call for Entry - MONOCHROME, USA

The first photographs to be part of the world of art were monochrome prints. The images were captured by large format cameras, developed into negatives and printed in the darkroom. The world of photography has come a long way since then with color dominating so much of what we shoot these days, and cameras now an integral part of our very portable phones.

With so many color images around us there is still something special about a monochrome print, whether it be black and white, sepia or even shades of a single color.  These are the images where all the emotion, texture and beauty are expressed in gradations from light to dark. No matter if your original image was shot with tri x film, a digital SLR, or your phone, if the end product is a terrific monochrome image, it fits the call.

OPEN CALL: ”A MEDIA QUILT PROJECT”, USA

17 novembre 2024 à 07:20

This large-scale participatory media project will utilize the concept of a traditional quilt through submissions and the lens of current video technology.

Through this OPEN CALL, (for Baltimore City and Baltimore County residents) Media Artist Mandy Morrison with Curator Aleem Allison, will select a collection of uploaded short videos that explore themes commonly portrayed in traditional quilts, such as comfort, friendship, love, gratitude, history, family, inequality, emotional and physical scarring, and loss. Using video mapping, these individual short videos will be organized into a larger projected time-based "Media Quilt” to be projected in Gallery 410, a downtown (Bromo Arts District) gallery space with large street-facing windows.

The installation is set to run from January 30-March 25, 2025, and the opening on January 30 will coincide with an exhibition opening at Maryland Art Place. The gallery’s location on the corner of Mulberry and Eutaw Streets, is an area with significant car and foot traffic. The all-glass windows of the gallery will create an immersive and dynamic display, especially during the dark evening winter months (January-March) when the projection will be most striking.

This is a project that portends to bring a wide range of individual art and arts-adjacent communities into dialogue that will consist of one singular and evolving piece.

Along with the exhibition and opening, there will be community engagement initiatives involving both contributing artists and local communities with a primary focus on those who live in or have businesses in the Bromo-Arts District.

Planned engagement activities include:Intermittent Friday and Saturday night media-jam sessions with refreshments during the exhibition of "A Media Quilt Project" and an Artist Talk and Roundtable with participants hosted by Allison and Morrison.

All selected artists will receive a modest honorarium, and be listed in publicity/promotional materials.

DEADLINE  for submissions be on Dec. 15 (11:29PM)

This project is administered by Maryland Art Place with the support of the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation and the Maryland State Council on the Arts

Mandy Morrison: Having a practice that spans over three decades, Morrison has lived, worked and traveled to many parts of the globe. With experiences that have provided a lens into varied occupations, her work has been influenced by how divisions of labor reinforce class and social order.  With an interest in the meaning of physical as well as digital spaces she views varying structures as conferring distinct forms of entitlement on different populations.  Her interdisciplinary practice spans performance, video, writing and photography and her singular and participatory projects have included dancers, youth groups, and community stakeholders.  Her work has been performed, exhibited and screened internationally at festivals, galleries and museums, including the Peale Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Queens Museum, Kunstlerhaus e.V., Hamburg, and CINESONIKA in Vancouver. Grants, fellowships and residencies include Tree of Life Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, Maryland State Arts Council, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, Illinois Arts Council, the New York State Council on the Arts, Wexner Center for the Arts, Foundation B.a.d. and the Sacatar Institute in Bahia, Brazil.

Aleem Allison’s journey into museums began with an interest in exploring cultural heritage across all walks of life. From an early age, his path through museums started in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, expanded to museums in Germany and Japan. Building his practice through Morgan State University’s Museum Studies graduate program, he has participated in various initiatives aimed at bridging the gaps between museums and a variety of cultural communities. As a cohort in 2023-24 Elizabeth Talford Scott Community Initiative - “No Stone Left Unturned,” he helped to lead a series of exhibitions that expanded the recognition of Talford Scott’s quilt oeuvre with presentations of her work alongside collaborative projects in the Baltimore museum area. He has also been able to develop his practice through his life experiences as a veteran of the US Air Force, classroom educator, and world traveler.

PhotoSpiva: National Photographic Competition & Exhibition, USA

Established in 1977, PhotoSpiva is the longest-running competition of its kind.

PhotoSpiva is a national competition hosted annually by Spiva Center for the Arts. Founded in 1977, PhotoSpiva has become the longest-running photographic competition of its kind in the U.S. As stated by the founders, the objective of PhotoSpiva is to “present an exhibition of excellence in photography, celebrating the scope and vigorous activity of today’s contemporary photographers.”

Co-Founder Jim Mueller stated, “We have intentionally avoided any categorization of either photographers or their work in setting forth the criteria for this competitive.” PhotoSpiva welcomes any photographic process as long as it is original artwork and has not been previously exhibited at Spiva Center for the Arts. This philosophy has created an unbiased forum for exhibiting and educating photographers. The PhotoSpiva prospectus, promotional materials and exhibition brochures are distributed to professional photographers, emerging artists, educators, students, and amateur photography enthusiasts throughout the United States.

Eligibility

PhotoSpiva is open to any amateur or professional photographer in the United States or its territories. Submitted images must be the photographer’s own work, and it is the sole responsibility of the photographer to obtain written releases from any recognizable person(s) depicted. Two-dimensional work derived from any photographic process — traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media — is eligible as long as the work is original and has never been exhibited at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. Three–dimensional work is not eligible for this competition and exhibition.

Noutoupatou, Mondes caribéens en mouvement, USA

5 novembre 2024 à 22:37

private view: 18th november, 6 pm

A plus A Gallery, Venice, San Marco 3073

Flavio Delice, Samuel Gelas, Shamika Germain

Organised by A plus A Gallery in collaboration with Campus Caraïbéen des Arts

supported by the Institut français

curated by Paola Lavra

A plus A gallery and the Campus Caraïbéen des Arts are pleased to announce «Noutoupatou, Mondes caribéens en mouvement». The exhibition, supported by the Institut Français de culture, coincides with the closing of the 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Noutoupatou, is a word, a sound, an invitation to look closely at the works of three young artists from the Caribbean art scene, from the islands of Haïti, Guadeloupe and Saint Martin, graduates of the Campus Caraïbéen des Arts of Fort-de-France in Martinique: Flavio Delice, Samuel Gelas, Shamika Germain. The exhibition is curated by Paola Lavra, anthropologist and lecturer at the Campus Caraïbéen des Arts and former student at the School for Curatorial Studies Venice, in collaboration with May Clementé, Director of the Galerie École of the CCA.

The project envisages a residency period for the artists in Venice, a masterclass proposed by Julien Creuzet and a series of initiatives aimed at creating a moment of exchange and encounter between the three artists and the city of Venice, both islands belonging to a vast archipelago that carries within itself an intricate network of relationships and connections to the world. The residency period will culminate with the opening of the exhibition in which the visitor will have the opportunity to confront that historical, sociological and cultural imprint that has profoundly marked the space and body, the plural and contradictory identity of a colonial society that constantly questions its origins, its affiliation and territorial status as a French island in the broader and more complex sphere of the Caribbean archipelago, its becoming in the globalised space of the Americas.

Today, the progressive deconstruction of the paradigm of Western modernity leaves room for new and singular paradigms of thought and action brought and translated by the specific language of contemporary art, inspired by the Glissantian poetics of relationship and « Tout monde ».

It is in this context that Flavio Delice follows the path and cartography traced by the inhabitants of Haïti in constant migration towards other shores. A land of origin that he never inhabited, ‘not native’, Haïti is the founder of a whole poetic and artistic imaginary that is built on the thread of the testimonies and stories of the fleeing Haïtians.

A real ‘ethnography of passages’ takes shape in the canvases and sculptures made from

recycled materials that make up the daily life based on the ‘debrouillardise’ and the urgency of the Haitian population exposed to telluric movements and the permanent imbalance of a country at war, which is still paying the price for its revolution today. A notebook of a return to the land of dreams and childhood, the set of works is inscribed in the dramatic context of the current conflicts that agitate the island of Haïti.

Shamika Germain uses the same device of immersion and capture (images, words and sounds) to narrate another migration: hers, that of the ‘Enfants de la Ddass’, children entrusted to public institutions or raised in foster families and care facilities. Collecting the voices and silences of bodies and souls separated from their mother’s womb translates into a rich production ranging from photography to drawing and painting, from sculpture to filmic device, from installation to performance of handwritten texts. Hard materials such as iron and iron cement are opposed to the softness of wool in the manufacture of ‘cradles’ that allude to the emptiness and lack of a childhood without dreams.

Intimacy thus becomes the support of a singular and polymorphous plastic and graphic writing, in the creation of an aesthetics of trauma, translated by the term créolo bless, a form of tragic catharsis operated by the reproduction and materialisation of the original wound. The individual story of the ‘Pupilles de l’État’ narrated by Shamika echoes the story of the Bumidom and the Enfants de la Creuse (1962/1984), the vast mass migration operation carried out by the Office for the Development of Migration in the overseas departments of which the children of the DOM territories (Réunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe) were the object and collateral victims.

Finally, the universe of children is present and active in the imposing canvases of Samuel Gelas, vast group portraits that refer to the experience of each human being constituting a social group but also of a humanity of which childhood is the common denominator. The device of the class photo is distorted by the coded language of a bestiary that seems to illustrate the drifts of a society characterised by a hybrid identity, by the encounter/clash between multiculturalism and globalisation. Children are the society of tomorrow in the classroom that brings together and encourages the meeting of origins, religions and different systems of thought.

In a context of crisis and multiform migrations bringing disparities linked to the concepts of class, race and gender, the poetics of relationship, the theoretical summa of Edouard Glissant, subverts the concept of class and inspires an artistic project based on the strength of the collective. The class portrait inscribes the individual in a social group that strongly affirms his singularity but also claims belonging to the world, to being Tout monde, where ‘the relationship becomes the infinite sum of all differences’. (Cf. L’invitation au voyage, 22 November 2004, E. Glissant interrogé par Laure Adler).

Special guest is the artist Julien Creuzet, representing France at the 60th. Biennale in Venice, the protagonist of a masterclass retracing the various stages of his career, which began in Martinique.

The masterclass is organised by the Institut français, in collaboration with the Campus Caraïbéen des Arts. It is aimed at students from the Martinique and Caen Academies of Fine Arts, as well as students from the Lycée d’arts appliqués Victor Anicet in Saint Pierre. This event has been made possible thanks to the support of the Collectivité Territoriale de Martinique.

Founded on the égida of Aimé Cesaire in 1984, the current Campus Caraïbéen des Arts is a Higher School of Art sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, integrated into the higher education system of French art schools. The only French-speaking centre for the teaching of the visual arts in the Caribbean and Central America, the higher institute puts into perspective the European system with which it is endowed in order to fit into the broader territoriality assigned to it by history and the status of ‘French overseas territory’.

The exhibition can be visited from 18 November to 21 December at the A plus A Gallery.

Those Who Tend, USA

Those Who Tend: Juried Exhibition in New York City

Visionary Art Collective is partnering with Warnes Contemporary Gallery in New York City to present our annual in-person juried group exhibition, Those Who Tend, curated by Kaylan Buteyn. These days, we have so much to tend to—countless demands that deserve our attention. Our art practice needs nurturing, our children need feeding, our gardens need weeding, and our inboxes need clearing. We are pulled in many directions, tending to various aspects of life. Yet, the most important tending we often overlook is towards ourselves. This call is a reflection for "those who tend"—an invitation to submit work created amidst the challenges of balancing a life full of responsibilities. Artist parents who are juggling their art practice, careers, domestic tasks, caregiving, and carving out time for self-care are invited to submit their work.

Those Who Tend will be presented at Warnes Contemporary in Brooklyn on April 24, 2025 and will run for approximately six to eight weeks. This exhibition will be actively promoted through social media on Visionary Art Collective, Warnes Contemporary, and the Artist/Mother Podcast. Additionally, a select number of artists will be chosen for an exclusive interview on the Artist/Mother podcast and featured in New Visionary Magazine.

Eligibility: This opportunity is open to artists who identify as parents and caregivers based in the United States. We welcome artists of all career levels to apply.

We accept all 2D & 3D mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, digital, prints, fiber art, collage, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and installation art. We do not accept film or video at this time.

This exhibition will be curated by Kaylan Buteyn, artist, curator, and founder of the Artist/Mother Podcast and Kinhouse Artist Residency. Buteyn’s work investigates physical representations of generational care through paintings, quilts, domestic textiles, abstraction and collage. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at galleries that include Peep Space in Tarrytown, NY, Ground Floor Gallery in Nashville, TN, Janice Charach Gallery in Detroit, MI, Spilt Milk in Edinburgh, Scotland, among others. She has been the recipient of artist grants from the Indiana Arts Commission and Metro Arts Nashville and her work has been featured in publications including Milked Mag and Create Magazine. In 2019, as a social extension of her art practice, Buteyn founded the Artist/Mother Podcast sharing interviews of working artists who are mothers. Buteyn has spent the last 7 years facilitating community for artists in many forms including creating exhibition opportunities for artists worldwide, organizing a critique group program for hundreds of participants, facilitating virtual programming, in-person artist retreats and more. Buteyn is the founder of the Kinhouse Artist Residency and co-directs Kinhouse Gallery in Fort Wayne, IN. She holds a BA in Communications and a BA in Studio Art from Houghton College and an MFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art. She lives with her partner and their 3 children in Fort Wayne, IN.

Poetry of the Ordinary

Deadline for submissions: Oct 14, 2024

Juror: Blue Mitchell

Prints due: Nov 22, 2024

Exhibition: December 6 - December 27, 2024

The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.
– W.B. Yeats

In our rush through life, we often overlook the extraordinary that lies within the ordinary — the beauty, poignancy, and simple poetic elegance so commonly found in ordinary moments: Random objects that appear in perfect symmetry. Human moments that define our humanity. Light that falls elegantly on a subject to perfectly describe it. With your work and your eye, show us the extraordinary beauty that lies all around us in ordinary moments.

All captures and processes are welcome.

We are very pleased that Blue Mitchell will be jurying and curating this exhibition. He will select approximately 35 images for the Exhibition Gallery, and 40 more for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be featured on social media, displayed in the exhibit catalog, and remain permanently on our website with photographer's URL.

Most recently offered as a bi-annual award to artists who have previously been enrolled in a Visual Arts residency program at Banff Centre, the Barbara Spohr Memorial Award for Photography will now take place annually and is open for application to all mid-career Canadian artists working in photography.

One mid-career Canadian artist will have the opportunity to undertake a self-directed residency with access to analogue and digital photographic production facilities at Banff Centre. The award winner will have access to the Crich Studio, a Leighton Artist Studio featuring private analogue darkroom facilities.

The award winner will also have the option of giving a public talk with an associated fee at CARFAC-based rates, presented by Walter Phillips Gallery.

Applications are open to Canadian mid-career artists with a substantial exhibition history. For the purposes of this program, this is defined as a minimum of ten exhibitions in a professional context such as artist-run centres, public art galleries, recognized photo festivals, etc.

Applicants must be Canadian, a Permanent Resident or eligible under the terms of the Jay Treaty. Banff Centre invites applicants and artists of all ages (18+), backgrounds, gender identities, and expressions.
