Creative Music Intensive 2025, USA

Applications are now open for the 2025 Creative Music Intensive (CMI), a two-week in-person program for musicians working in any genre. Hosted at Arts Letters & Numbers in upstate New York, CMI is a space for collaboration, experimentation, and creative growth. Participants will be immersed in the process of making and performing music, with opportunities to explore new approaches to composition, improvisation, and interdisciplinary work, all while developing both solo and collaborative projects.

The 2025 program will be led by Michael Harrison, Music Program Director and recurring visiting artist at Arts Letters & Numbers. Special guest Vijay Iyer will join for the first week. The faculty also includes Bergamot Quartet, Elliot Cole, Payton MacDonald, and David Gersten, the founding director of Arts Letters & Numbers. Together, they will offer daily group sessions, weekly private lessons, and guidance in collaborative development. Participants will have time and space to rehearse, compose, record, and reflect within a vibrant creative community.

Topics explored throughout the program include contemporary composition, improvisation, composing for string quartet and percussion, Indian classical music (ragas, rhythms, techniques), performance and recording strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The program concludes with a public performance on August 16, presented both on-site and online, in which participants can perform their own work or collaborate with others. Faculty members will also present concerts of their own music.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Although the extended deadline is June 15, those who apply sooner will have a better chance of being selected for writing opportunities with Bergamot Quartet, the ALN Percussion Ensemble, and Payton MacDonald. These opportunities may become limited as selections are made on a rolling basis.
